North Carolina General Statutes §42-42 (7):
A minimum of one CO detection device per unit and per level is required for all residential rental units containing fossil-fuel burning appliances. (Effective date: January 1, 2010)

North Carolina General Statutes §143-138:
Carbon monoxide detectors shall be installed in every enclosed space having a fossil fuel burning heater, appliance, or fireplace and in any enclosed space, including a sleeping room, that shares a common wall, floor, or ceiling with an enclosed space having a fossil fuel burning heater, appliance, or fireplace.(Effective date: October 2, 2013)
