Adoption of 2009 IRC:
Detached one- and two-family dwellings and townhomes of not more than three stories are required to be equipped with CO alarms outside of each separate sleeping area in the immediate vicinity of the bedrooms in dwelling units. (Effective date: December 2009)

Carbon Monoxide Alarm Standards Act:
By June 2015, carbon monoxide alarms must be installed in apartments in a multifamily dwelling which use a fossil fuel-burning heater or appliance, fireplace, or an attached garage. Requires owners of multifamily dwellings used as rental properties which have a fossil fuel-burning heater or appliance, fireplace or an attached garage to: install carbon monoxide alarms in bedrooms and near fossil fuel-burning heater or fireplace; to replace stolen, missing or broken alarms before commencing a new occupancy of the property; and to ensure new batteries are installed at the beginning of the new occupancy. Requires renters to maintain alarms during the rental period.  Establishes penalties.
