2009 IRC Adoption:
New one- and two-family dwellings and townhomes of not more than three stories must be equipped with CO alarms outside of each separate sleeping area in the immediate vicinity of the bedrooms in dwelling units within which fuel-burning appliances are installed and in dwelling units that have attached garages.
Note: Tennessee adopted the 2009 International Residential Code (IRC) CO requirements for areas of the state without their own building codes. Either: (1) the State can enforce the code using certified contract inspectors; or (2) municipalities can choose to enforce the code themselves; or (3) municipalities can elect to opt out of code enforcement with a super majority of the elected officials voting not to enforce the IRC.

Child day care facilities and family homes are required to install CO detectors in corridors, interior recreation rooms, and sleeping rooms. (Effective date: June 20, 2006)
